ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - Nearly one week after a St. Louis County Councilwoman announced her intent to file legislation to address gun violence, it's been met with stark opposition from a fellow councilman. A Colorado conservative group filed a federal lawsuit against the Secretary of State and Gov. Jared Polis on Monday, challenging a law passed by the legislature two years ago that requires tax-cutting ballot measures warn voters about the potential impact of lost revenue.Advance Colorado, together with several individual residents, argue that the law violates the First Amendment and forces groups promoting certain ballot measures to accept language that the groups may disagree with. Advance Colorado has been approved to gather signatures for two tax-cutting ballot measures this year, and it argued that the warning label it must present to voters doesn’t accurately reflect the impact those tax cuts would have on state funding. The law passed in 2021, and it requires that any ballot measure that proposes to cut taxes also include language noting that the proposal would reduce state funding for specific programs like education or health care. A fugitive 400-pound female bear identified by California wildlife officials as 64F and known to the public as “Hank the Tank,” linked to 21 home break-ins and property damage south of Lake Tahoe, has been cleared for relocation across state lines to a refuge in eastern Colorado.Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials have approved this transfer in response to a request from the private, non-profit Wild Animal Sanctuary. The bear’s three young cubs, who accompanied 64F on recent break-ins, may be sent to a rescue facility in Petaluma, California “in hopes they can discontinue the negative behaviors they learned from the sow,” according to a California Department of Fish and Wildlife announcement.Bears that bother humans in California typically aren’t relocated, officials said. It’s now been a year since I moved back to Aurora after 24 years in Denver’s south suburbs, and my wife and I have been enjoying all that this vibrant city has to offer, as well as gaining an appreciation of the challenges Aurora faces. Moving here has also given me a front-row seat for the three-ring circus that is Aurora city politics, with a municipal election approaching that could change how Aurora is governed and which party governs it.Earlier in these pages, I wrote about races taking shape for Aurora mayor and five of 10 city council seats in the Nov. 7 city election. And I noted the head-scratching fact that in a city where voters lean Democratic, the sitting mayor and a majority on the council are Republican-aligned (although the positions officially are non-partisan), most of them elected with just a fraction of the vote. Now there’s another act at the circus: The question of whether Aurora’s next mayor should have more power in running the city.
