SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Governors from the Southwestern United States are pursuing stronger business ties with Taiwan in hopes of attracting new foreign investments and jobs to their landlocked states. Trade missions this week have taken New Mexico. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Arizona counterpart Katie Hobbs, both Democrats, to the self-governing island of Taiwan.Hobbs said her goal was to encourage ongoing investments to make Arizona a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. She met Monday with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. executives and suppliers, visiting their plant as well as water treatment facilities. DERNA, Libya (AP) — Abdel-Hamid al-Hassadi survived the devastating flooding in eastern Libya, but he lost some 90 people from his extended family.The 23-year-old law graduate rushed upstairs along with his mother and his elder brother, as heavy rains lashed the city of Derna on the evening of Sept. 10. Two teens from Las Vegas have been arrested and are facing murder charges in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of 64-year-old Andreas “Andy” Probst, a retired chief of police for the city of Bell, as he was riding his bike in a residential area of Las Vegas last month. The incident, which authorities at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are calling intentional, occurred on Aug. 14 near Tenaya Way and Centennial Parkway in a neighborhood community approximately 16 miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Officers arrived at the scene just after 6 a.m. and found the 64-year-old cyclist suffering from life-threatening injuries. Probst was taken to UMC Trauma where he later died of his injuries. A man with a sledgehammer died during a confrontation while attempting to enter a Long Beach elementary school on Tuesday.The suspect was only identified as an adult male by the Long Beach Police Department.Officers responded to calls of a home invasion robbery on the 6700 block of Orizaba Avenue around 2:27 p.m.The suspect, who was armed with a sledgehammer, had walked over to the nearby parking lot of McKinley Elementary School.As the man attempted to climb a fence and enter the school grounds, a group of males pulled him down and detained him while awaiting officers. OAKLAND – A 52-year-old Danville woman will serve nearly two years in prison for embezzling over $1.7 million from her former employer, Men’s Wearhouse, and its parent company, Tailored Brands, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.Gina Suzanne Lonestar’s 22-month sentence comes after she pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in May, prosecutors said in a news release.
