HONG KONG (AP) — China’s exports tumbled 12.4% in June from a year earlier as demand weakened after central banks raised interest rates to curb inflation even as Chinese leaders struggled to keep a post-COVID recovery from faltering.Customs data released Thursday showed imports slid 6.8% to $214.7 billion. Exports edged up slightly from the month before, totaling $285.3 billion. The trade surplus was $70.2 billion, rising from $65.8 billion in May. Trade weakness adds to downward pressure on the world’s second-largest economy. Global consumer demand has weakened after the Federal Reserve and central banks in Europe and Asia raised interest rates to bring inflation down from near multi-decade highs by reining in business and consumer activity. In January-June, China’s total trade including imports and exports fell nearly 5% from a year earlier. Exports slipped 3.2% and imports declined 6.7% as prices of commodities like oil fell and demand inside China also faltered. Exports to...

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An online influencer has been arrested in Dubai over a satirical TikTok video in which he portrays a brash Emirati on a spending spree inside a luxury car showroom. The comedic sketch, in which he tosses stacks of bills at bewildered employees and offers to buy the most expensive car — a $600,000 Ferrari SF90 — poked fun at the lavish lifestyles on display in the city, known for its gleaming skyscrapers and over-the-top tourism attractions.Dubai is more socially lenient than much of the Middle East, with a relaxed dress code, bars and clubs serving alcohol — and even a local comedy scene. But vaguely worded laws forbid any speech, including journalism and satire, that is deemed critical of authorities or insulting to the United Arab Emirates, the federation of sheikhdoms that includes Dubai. The influencer, Hamdan Al Rind, who refers to himself as the “Car Expert” online, is a UAE resident of Asian nationality. A global NATO is not helpful to global security

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:49:30 GMT

Over the years, while claiming to be a regional defensive alliance, NATO has been hyping up regional tensions and creating bloc confrontation. NATO has publicly stated on many occasions that it remains a regional alliance and does not seek a geographical breakthrough. Asia lies beyond the geographical scope of the North Atlantic and has no need for a replica of NATO. However, NATO, as a military organization of the North Atlantic, has been bent on going east into the Asia-Pacific, interfering in regional affairs and inciting bloc confrontation. This calls for high vigilance among countries in the region. The attitude of the majority of countries in the region is very clear. They oppose the emergence of military blocs in the region. They don’t want NATO’s replica of bloc confrontation around the world. And they certainly will not allow any Cold War or hot war to happen again. At the 2022 Madrid summit, NATO adopted a new Strategic Concept, claiming that NATO allies will address togeth...
