Published Thu, 06 Mar 2025 03:31:14 GMT

SAN JOSE – When Amiya Kuchibhotla spiked the ball and made the final point, the Archbishop Mitty gymnasium erupted as the 3-1 NorCal Open Division victory went final. The senior middle hitter became one of many Monarchs mobbed together in the center of the court, the team having vanquished St. Francis for the final time in 2023, the last of six meetings between the elite volleyball programs. The San Jose school denied St. Francis back-to-back NorCal Open titles, gave Mitty two of the past three and put another championship banner in its crowded rafters. The Monarch’s next stop? A trip to Santiago Canyon College in Orange County for the state Open Division championship game. “I’m so happy and so grateful, especially since it’s my senior year,” Kuchibhotla said. “I’m super-excited.”Archbishop Mitty won the first set 25-12, scoring the final five points behind a flurry of emphatic kills and aces. Sophomore Makenna Crosson had five kills, one ace and a block in that dominant set.“...

A Warriors offense already searching for its identity was without its core three, but managed to make it a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves and their top rated defense.Golden State lost their fourth straight game 104-101 on Tuesday night where rookie Brandin Podziemski made his best case for more minutes going forward. He put up 23 points to become the first Warrior not named Curry to score more than 20 points in a game this season. Dario Saric became the second, scoring 21 points — including a go-ahead 3-pointer in the game’s waning seconds to put Golden State up one.But the Timberwolves had just a little more juice. Karl-Anthony Towns hit a 3 to give Minnesota a lead and Mike Conley hit the dagger 3 to end it. TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares surged higher on Wednesday, cheered by a rally on Wall Street that was one of the best days of the year following a surprisingly encouraging report on inflation.Tokyo’s benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 1.8% to 33,293.67 as investors appeared to shrug off news that Japan’s economy contracted at a worse than expected 2.1% annual rate in July-September.The world’s No. 3 economy is grappling with weakening private demand from consumers and businesses, slack demand for Japan’s exports and sluggish wage growth that will continue to drag on consumer spending, which is the main driver of the economy, said Marcel Thieliant of Capital Economics.“Accordingly, we expect GDP growth to slow from 1.7% this year to 0.5% in 2024,” he said in a commentary. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 2.8% to 17,885.19, while the Shanghai Composite gained 1.4% to 3,072.64 after economic data for October showed the economy is holding up even as many indicators slow.Factory output wa...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The man accused of attacking former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer apologized Tuesday, echoing right-wing conspiracy theories to explain to jurors that he went to the Pelosis’ home as part of a bigger plot to end what he viewed as government corruption.David DePape spoke for more than an hour in which he tearfully recounted about how his political leanings went from leftist to right wing after reading a comment on a YouTube video about former President Donald Trump. He said he bludgeoned Paul Pelosi after realizing his larger plan might be unraveling. Testimony wrapped up later Tuesday, with closing arguments expected Wednesday. DePape has pleaded not guilty to attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official with intent to retaliate against the official for performance of their duties. His attorneys argue that he was not seeking to go after Nancy Pelosi because of her official d...
