Mother’s Day can conjure up scenes of lavish breakfasts or maybe well-meaning but gently burned toast served to mommy in bed.Because that day may look very different for unhoused mothers, a Northern Virginia organization is stepping up to show those moms some appreciation. It’s a drive called “Pack a Purse.”“So we take new and gently used purses, and we pack them up with toiletries. And then we go distribute them on Mother’s Day,” said Jay Herriott, founder of The 25th Project. They’re seeking donations, and as long as the purses are new or gently used, the tag on the bag doesn’t matter.“So we’ve had Coach purses, D&B and high-end purses and regular purses,” Herriott said, noting that donated bags can be dropped off at Burke Community Church in Fairfax County, Virginia. The church’s website says they’re accepting purses on May 7 and 14 and suggests what toiletries to include in the bags.Herriott sai...Saleh sees ‘fire’ in Rodgers, dispels ‘silly’ wish list talk

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Robert Saleh has seen all he needs to know that Aaron Rodgers is all in with the New York Jets. For one, the four-time NFL MVP has been practicing with the team during voluntary workouts, something Rodgers hadn’t done his last few offseasons with Green Bay.But there’s something else. And it goes far beyond the football field. “You just see a fire in a guy’s eye when you’re sitting and talking to him,” Saleh said Friday after the team’s first rookie minicamp practice. ”He’s coming to win. You can just feel it in his voice. You can see it in his eyes and the way he’s going about his business.”Rodgers was acquired last week by the Jets, who got a player they believe will help them snap a 12-year playoff drought that is the longest active slump in the NFL — and lead them deep into the postseason. But these are the early days of that journey, and there were some who wondered about Rodgers’ commitment to the process — especially ...Santander grand slam among 2 homers, Orioles beat Braves 9-4

ATLANTA (AP) — Anthony Santander is heating up, which is another good sign for the streaking Baltimore Orioles.Santander homered from both sides of the plate, including a grand slam, and Cedric Mullins also went deep as the Orioles won for the 14th time in 17 games, 9-4 over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.Dean Kremer allowed one run in six strong innings for Baltimore, which became the first team this season to reach the seats against Braves ace Max Fried.“Sweet!” Mullins exclaimed, unaware that Fried had not allowed a homer. “It was bound to happen.” Santander homered from the right side against Fried in the fourth to put Baltimore ahead to stay. Then, batting lefty in the seventh against Joe Jimenez, he delivered his first career grand slam to turn what had been a tight game into a rout.Santander came into the night hitting .241 with three homers. On their latest album “Chariot of the Gods,” the great Australian band Hoodoo Gurus ask the musical question “Ain’t it time to settle down?” The answer, according to frontman Dave Faulkner by phone recently, is: Heck, no.“The funny thing is that’s the oldest song on the album, I wrote it 20 years ago and it finally found a place in the band,” he says. “So that’s a picture of a much younger man writing about being old and unfashionable and irrelevant – We did another one called “Sell-By Date’ on the same idea. And the answer is that we are proud and confident in what we do, we have the same intentions, we haven’t mellowed or changed our course. Aside from looking older, there’s no difference in us.”Though their popularity has been steady at home, in the US they’re known mainly for a string of hits — “I Want You Back,” “Bittersweet,” “Come Anytime” — that were as close as ‘80s radio could go to the sound of ‘60s-style garage rock. At the time the band wore its vinta...Lowry: It’s wrong to censor views of RFK Jr.

ABC News did a wide-ranging interview with Robert Kennedy Jr. the other day. The ABC reporter asked him a number of challenging questions, notably about the lack of support from his own family for his presidential run.It was interesting stuff and good journalism — having on the heterodox, newly minted presidential candidate, allowing him to make the case for his candidacy, and forcing him to think and reflect out loud. Then, came the note at the end: ABC, as a matter of “editorial judgment,” had left out portions of the interview where Kennedy had expanded on his anti-vaccine views (which were briefly discussed). Now this is not, as a technical matter, censorship; ABC News isn’t a government entity and can exercise whatever editorial judgment it pleases. But the spirit of the exercise was in keeping with censorship, and it reflected how the press and social media platforms operated during the height of the pandemic when they were the self-appointed arbiters of ...Liam Hendriks perfect in 1st rehab outing in return from lymphoma: ‘I’m just excited to be here,’ the Chicago White Sox closer says

He announced on April 20 he was cancer-free after completing chemotherapy on April 5.“First game out, it was nice being in the bullpen, getting that camaraderie going,” Hendriks said in a videoconference call Friday night. “But a little wet out here tonight. So it was always an interesting one, running in. But then go through my warmup pitches and then they made a PA announcement and both teams got out and started clapping, which is — don’t get me wrong, it’s really, really nice. I very much appreciate it. It made me very emotional.“I’m a guy who pitches on anger, and it’s really hard to get angry when you know the other team is full of nice people. So a li...McCaughey: Don’t buy into Sharpton’s attack on McDonald’s

Racism is abhorrent. So are shakedown artists who cry racism to rake in cash. The Rev. Al Sharpton publicly threatened McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski on April 27, using the same language his National Action Network has used for three decades to squeeze cash out of major corporations.Sharpton referred to “multiple accusations of racial discrimination” by McDonald’s and warned that NAN is poised to mobilize nationally against the company. “You cannot sell Black folks Big Macs and give us little justice,” he said.Mainstream media glorified this threat, calling Sharpton a “social justice leader.”Racial discrimination should be punished to the full extent of the law. But Sharpton isn’t a judge or juror. Is McDonald’s guilty of racial discrimination? That’s for courts to decide. McDonald’s has been sued by Black franchise owners alleging they were mistreated compared with white owners. But a federal judge threw out on...Solomon: NYC bans weight discrimination – will others follow?

PHILADELPHIA — Grant Williams was writhing on the court in pain. He was holding his face, crouched down with two knees on the floor, and finally emerged to go take a seat on the Celtics bench. His face was bloodied. The Celtics forward had just taken the shot of all shots. As Jaylen Brown fouled Joel Embiid with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter, bodies were flying. Brown had dove to the floor for a loose ball, and he took bodies with him. He collided with Williams. As they both crashed to the floor, Embiid was trying to keep his balance when he inadvertently stomped straight on Williams’ head. All the weight of the 76ers 280-pounder’s right foot, right on Williams’ skull.“When I saw Grant get his head stepped on by a 300-pound individual, to see that live was crazy, seeing that in real time,” Brown said. “It was probably the craziest thing I’ve seen on a basketball court.”Williams found the video after the game, and though he had already lived it, the visual was just as jarr...Latest news
