OSHA fines Suncor $15,000 over December fire at Commerce City refinery that injured 2 workers Federal officials this month fined Suncor Energy more than $15,000 for a safety violation that led two employees to be injured in a December fire at the company’s Commerce City oil refinery. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a $15,625 fine on June 7 for what inspectors labeled a serious violation at the refinery, according to an inspection report on the OSHA website. The report said the refinery violated standards for “process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals.”Guidelines on OSHA’s website said those standards are in place to prevent unwanted releases of hazardous chemicals, especially into locations where employees and others could be exposed to serious hazards. However, the online inspection report does not provide a summary of the incident or details about the specific violation that was cited. An OSHA spokeswoman confirmed the fine was related to the Dec. 24 fire at the refinery, but told The Denver Post to file a Fr...

Opinion: By opposing a third presidential option, Udall sides with the enemies of democracy Question: What is the largest political party in Colorado? Most guess Republican or Democrat, but it’s actually “unaffiliated” by a mile. Unaffiliated voters number 1.7 million, compared to 957,000 Republicans and around 1 million Democrats. And Colorado isn’t unique in this regard. Nationally, there are as many independents as there are Republicans and Democrats combined, and the number is growing as more voters reject the extremism in both parties. It should go without saying that this commonsense majority deserves to be represented in our politics, but it hasn’t been for decades — until now. A group called No Labels is fighting to give the majority a voice in 2024 by establishing a ballot line for a potential independent Unity Ticket, which would feature a Republican and Democrat together as running mates. This is a direct response to so many Americans voicing strong concerns about another term for either Trump or Biden.Every advocate for democracy should welcome this develop...

Denver school board’s closed-door meeting after East High shooting violated Colorado law, judge rules Denver’s school board violated Colorado law when members met behind closed doors the day after the shooting inside East High School, a judge ruled Friday, ordering Denver Public Schools to publicly release the recording of the entire meeting within three days. The Denver Post and five other Colorado news organizations sued the school district, alleging the Board of Education violated the Colorado Open Meetings Law when it met in an executive session — which was closed to the public — one day after a student shot and injured two administrators inside East. As part of the lawsuit, the media coalition sought the release of the meeting’s recording.Denver District Court Judge Andrew Luxen on Friday issued an order that found the executive session was “convened in violation of statute” because the topics discussed during the five-hour meeting were not properly noticed beforehand. As a result, “no resolution, rule, regulation, ordinance or formal ac...

James Cameron imagines the ‘horrifying’ sound heard by the Titan sub passengers in their final moments James Cameron, the director of 1997’s “Titanic,” is probably accustomed to thinking of events in narrative, cinematic terms, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he would apply his expertise in both filmmaking and deep-sea exploration to vividly describe what could have happened to the doomed Titan submersible and its five passengers. In a series of interviews with media outlets Thursday, Cameron expressed sadness over the similarities between the Titanic disaster in 1912 and the Titan submersible, which imploded in the North Atlantic and killed five people aboard, the Coast Guard reported Thursday. Cameron also said he had correctly guessed as early as Monday that the vessel had imploded, according to the Daily Beast and the Washington Post. He told CNN’s Anderson Cooper that his contacts among deep sea explorers told him the vessel had reportedly lost communication and tracking simultaneously on Sunday, about an hour and 45 minutes into its 12,000-f...
