Three-hundred thirty delegates to the Democratic National Convention who backed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in his 2016 and 2020 presidential bids sent a letter to the senator urging him to introduce a resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. The letter, sent on Wednesday, urges Sanders to introduce a Senate companion bill to a ceasefire resolution introduced last month in the House of Representatives. The Sanders convention delegates also called on him to support an end to the Israeli blockade of Gaza, the occupation of Palestinian land, U.S. military funding for war crimes against Palestinians, and the expansion of Israeli settlements. “Palestinians require more than just a ‘humanitarian pause.’”“We’ve progressed beyond the stage of seeking mere condemnations or symbolic gestures,” the delegates wrote. “We concur with your assertion that these ‘unspeakable crimes’ must cease and that ‘the bombs and missiles from both sides’ should be halted. But Palestinians require more tha...UN Security Council adopts resolution calling for urgent ‘humanitarian pauses’ in Israel-Hamas war after four failures

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Atlanta defender Miles Robinson is the only Major League Soccer player on the U.S. roster for Thursday night’s match against Trinidad and Tobago, the first of two games in a five-day span that will determine a berth in next year’s Copa América and the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.Robinson and New England defender DeJuan Jones were the only MLS players on the October roster as Gregg Berhalter relies heavily on a Europe-based squad in the start of his second term as American coach.“You have a combination of MLS being in the middle of their playoffs. You have the form of some players both in MLS and in Europe. You have us wanting to look at some younger alternatives,” Berhalter said Wednesday. “We don’t get hung up on where the players are coming from. We’re looking at how do we grow this team, grow the player pool and give experience to a broad selection of players?”Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah and captain Tyler Adams will miss the total-goa...La importancia de la reunión entre Joe Biden y Xi Jinping

PARIS (AP) — A police officer being investigated in the killing of a 17-year-old of North African origin that touched off riots around France was freed from jail Wednesday while the probe continues. The prosecutor’s office in the Paris suburb of Nanterre, where Nahel Merzouk was shot, said magistrates concluded that continued detention of the motorcycle officer “no longer fulfills the legal criteria” for which he was held. The officer, who has been identified only as Florian M., was jailed June 29, two days after Merzouk was killed. The teenager was shot during a traffic stop in Nanterre. Video showed two officers at the window of the Mercedes the youth was driving, one with his gun pointed at the teenager. As the car pulled forward, the officer fired once. The officer was given a preliminary charge of voluntary homicide, which means there must be further investigation before an eventual decision to put him on trial. The judges on Wednesday ordered the police officer to stay out of Nante...Delaware Supreme Court asked to overturn former state auditor’s public corruption convictions

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Delaware’s Supreme Court is weighing whether to overturn the unprecedented convictions of the state’s former auditor on public corruption charges. The court heard arguments Wednesday in the case of Kathy McGuiness, who was convicted last year on misdemeanor charges of conflict of interest, official misconduct and noncompliance with state procurement rules. A jury acquitted her on felony charges of theft and witness intimidation. The conflict of interest charge involved the hiring of McGuiness’ daughter as a part-time employee in the auditor’s office. McGuinness also was convicted of structuring payments to a consulting firm to avoid having to get them approved by the state Division of Accounting. The structuring and conflict of interest convictions laid the foundation for jurors to also find McGuiness guilty of official misconduct. The trial judge later threw out the contract structuring conviction. The trial marked the first time in Delaware history that a sit...New Hampshire defies national Democrats’ new calendar and sets the presidential primary for Jan. 23

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire’s secretary of state on Wednesday scheduled the state’s presidential primaries for Jan. 23, 2024, extending its century-old streak of going first despite national Democrats’ efforts to overhaul the nominating calendar.State law requires New Hampshire’s Republican and Democratic primaries to be held at least seven days before any similar contest and gives the secretary of state sole authority to set the date. Like his predecessor did for decades, Secretary of State David Scanlan waited for the dust to settle in other states before announcing his decision. He chose as his backdrop the Statehouse’s Hall of Flags, which displays more than 100 blood-stained and bullet-ridden battle flags carried by New Hampshire soldiers in the Civil War and onward. Calling it a memorial to those who fought for freedom and democracy, Scanlan said New Hampshire still represents those values.“The government and political climate we have created here reflects t...Spain’s leader defends amnesty deal for Catalan separatists ahead of vote on new government

MADRID (AP) — Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday defended his controversial amnesty deal for Catalonia’s separatists in parliament a day before the Socialist leader seeks the endorsement of the chamber to form a new government.Sánchez has the support of six smaller parties to ensure that he can reach the absolute majority of 176 deputies needed to reestablish his minority coalition government with the left-wing Sumar (Joining Forces) party. The formation of a new government would end a period of political uncertainty since inconclusive national elections on July 23 left a highly fractured parliament. The center-right Popular Party received the most votes in the elections, but it failed to get enough support to form a government in September because of its alliances with the far-right Vox party. The Socialists finished second in the elections with 121 seats in the 350-seat Parliament but now have the support of 179 lawmakers in all.Controversy has erupted over dea...Queen’s named in anti-semitism class-action suit

Queen’s University is one of three Canadian schools being named in a class-action lawsuit alleging recurring anti-semitism and failure to deal with incidents on campus in a meaningful way. The suit addresses anti-semitic events experienced on the campuses of Toronto Metropolitan University, Queen’s University and The University of British Columbia – with each standalone lawsuit seeking damages of $15 million. The suit against Queen’s represents current and former Jewish students at the university, alleging that Queen’s has been negligent and failed in its duty to investigate instances of anti-semitism and to foster an environment where Jewish students feel safe and welcome. The anonymous plaintiffs are being represented by Diamond and Diamond Lawyers, who said in a release that the track record of Queen’s and other named universities offering statements denouncing anti-semitism and hate speech have not gone far enough to satisfy...Latest news
